May 21st - The End of the World and WarGames

When I was a little girl, fear of a nuclear war was all the rage. I remember a kid in the third grade coming to class crying because his big brother told him that the end of the world would finally come that day. I was curious about that possibility, but skeptical. If the end of the world was really coming tomorrow and his big brother was so sure about it, how come nobody else was freaking out about it?  read more...

Happy 70th Birthday to Mouseketeer and Lawrence Welk Show Performer Bobby Burgess!

Kids and teenagers today may not realize that before "Dancing with the Stars", there was "The Lawrence Welk Show." And before the "Lawrence Welk Show" there was... "The Mickey Mouse Club"! read more...

Before the Sahara Closed - Las Vegas in the 1950's

Next year would have been Sahara Hotel and Casino's 60th birthday. Sadly, it closed today after 59 years in business. It has a history of great performers there, including Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Dean Martin... the list goes on and on. Bobby Darin, who would have celebrated his 75th birthday just two days ago, also performed there.

What did Las Vegas look like back in the days when these great performers performed at the Sahara?

Spectacular! I found this video on YouTube that shows Las Vegas 55 years ago - in 1956.  read more...

70 Years Ago: Women's Hairstyles of 1941 - Pin Curls Galore!

Seventy years ago in May of 1941, women were busy curling and curling and curling their hair. Of course, they were also busy rolling out dough in the kitchen, scrubbing their laundry, hanging it on the line, folding it, carrying shopping bags home, carrying babies, cleaning babies, sweeping floors, weeding the garden... the list goes on and on. When did they find time to create those perfect pin curls with their already overworked arms and hands?  read more...

Retropolis Tour of America: Historic Downtown Tucson, Arizona

The next stop on our Retropolis Tour of America is a visit to historic downtown Tucson, Arizona.

Those who love old theatres or art deco will enjoy the Fox Theater, which originally opened in 1930. This beautifully restored theater is proof that a building that has been vacant for 25 years can still have hope for restoration.  The Rialto Theater, which opened in 1920, is also downtown.

In 1922 El Charro Cafe opened in downtown Tucson. It is the oldest restaurant in Tucson, and one of the oldest Mexican restaurants in the United States. read more...

Time flies! And so does this antique quail and cuckoo clock!

I'm sorry I haven't been around much lately. April was such a hectic month, enough to make one go cuckoo like this clock. Actually, this antique cuckoo clock is really awesome. Notice that in addition to a cuckoo bird, it has a quail. It's incredible that it is able to work since it was made more than 100 years ago! Thanks to very skilled human hands, these clock hands keep on moving. read more...

Why did Joey Lawrence watch Johnny Carson on TV?

Time for a fun (and funny!) 80's flashback. If you were around in the 1980's, you probably saw Joey Lawrence on the TV show "Gimme a Break!".  You might have also seen him as a guest on "Silver Spoons" or "Diff'rent Strokes". I remember him in all of those shows, but I never saw him on this episode of "The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson", probably because I was too young to be up that late. I'm glad I got to see it just now because it literally made me laugh out loud! read more...

Hugh Hefner - When He Was Younger

Who's the birthday boy today?

Hugh Hefner!

Hugh Hefner turns 85 today.

So, maybe he's not a birthday BOY. He's a birthday MAN. Eighty years ago Hugh was just a five year old boy. Eighty years may seem like a long time, but on the other hand, life flies by very fast. On the great timeline of the world, eighty-five years is a tiny dot. A crumb. read more...
