1962 - John Glenn Went Swimming and Water Skiing With Jackie Kennedy. Also Orbited Earth.

John Glenn turns 90 years old today! Happy birthday, you Earth Orbiter, you! Let's take a little trip back in time to John Glenn's earlier years and imagine that the social networking sites were around back then. Let's go with the year of 1962. In John Glenn's info on a social newtworking page, he might have listed his hometown as Cambridge, Ohio. He might have listed a little info in his bio about his history with the Navy and Marine Corps in the 40's and 50's. But, what would his status updates say in 1962? Maybe he might have said something like: read more...

French Mid-Century Modern and French Film: Mon Oncle

Happy Bastille Day! To celebrate France, here's a "retro movie review" I wrote a few years ago about a French 50's film called "Mon Oncle." This movie a must-see for anyone who loves mid-century modern design.

Mon Oncle, a film by Jacques Tati, is a satirical view of modern life in the 1950's. It was filmed in the late 50's, and even though it focuses on 50s life, it has a timeless quality to it. Perhaps that is because the perception that ultra modern living is sterile and cold still exists among many people today.

Final Space Shuttle Launch TODAY

If the weather goes well, the final Space Shuttle will launch today after 30 years of the Space Shuttle program. As much as I want to see it launch, I don't want to see it launch because I know it's the final one.

After thirty years of greatness, the story of the final shuttle launch doesn't even get a big headline on the major news websites. A certain trial that is already over is still top news right now. Time to take a step back from all of that and reflect on the incredible shuttle program.  read more...

Peace: Princess Diana and Mother Teresa

Fifty years ago, a princess was born. Many little girls read storybooks about princesses, but few get to experience what it is like to be a REAL princess. Princess Diana got to experience it. And she was a REAL princess, in every sense of the word. Instead of using her title of "princess" as an opportunity to boss people around and enjoy getting served by others, she used her title of "princess" as an opportunity to serve others.  read more...

Happy 100th Birthday, IBM! Cheers to staying modern with age!

People often refer to the generations who are older than them as "old fashioned". There is a stereotype of old people who get stuck in their old habits and old ideas, who are unwilling to change and grow with age. Actually, there are plenty of younger adults who are just as stubborn about their ways, who are unwilling to change their thinking and grow. However, people tend to think of younger people as stubborn, rather than "old fashioned". Once they get older, they'll be called "old fashioned". read more...

Retropolis Tour of America: Rollerskating Dance Moves that ROCK in Little Rock, Arkansas

These dance moves don't just ROCK. They ROLL!

When I lived in New Orleans I used to watch the best breakdancers I've ever seen who would regularly perform on the streets. They could do foot work that would almost make you believe they were magical - as if their feet were going to float right up off the sidewalk. At times they would make me wonder how they could do certain moves without breaking their ankles or snapping their neck.  read more...
