Who knew a water tower could be so beautiful? Wilmington Delaware. That's Who.

Have you ever seen an Italian Renaissance Revival Style water tower? If only all water towers were made of natural field stone like this one, or at least if they could be a little bit more about form - not just function. Most water towers look like enormous white tanks or rusty UFOs towering high above houses. read more...

Cheering in Connecticut in the 1970's

In Connecticut, we visit a cheerleading squad in the 70's. With their plaid skirts and blue sweaters over long sleeved crisp white blouses, they seem so much more sweet and innocent than cheerleaders of today. However, I did notice around the one minute mark of the video, that the second girl in line pushed the girl in front forward. Meow!

I can't help but wonder if these girls have pain in their knees today. I think every jump in this home movie either started or ended with them bending their knees to a low squat. Ouch!

Colorado - Home of the first Rainbow Gathering - 1972

Most people have heard of Woodstock, but not as many have heard of a Rainbow Gathering. These have been going on since 1972; the first one was in Colorado. Although yesterday I expressed that it seems like all the hippies were gone by the time I started kindergarten, the fact is, they are still around. You just don't see them everywhere you go, as in the late 60's / early 70's. One place you can still find them is at a Rainbow Gathering - a gathering of peace and love. People share with each other or trade items there, rather than exchange currency. read more...

Turn Turn Turn to California and The Byrds

This is the song "Turn Turn Turn" as performed by Los Angeles band The Byrds in 1965. I think the world needs songs like this again. Watching the news has become a stressful task, and I find myself wondering more and more, "Isn't there any positive news?" read more...

Learn to Cook with a Dutch Oven in Arkansas

When I was young I got to stay with my family in an A-frame cabin on Lake Ouachita in Arkansas. I LOVED staying in that A-frame cabin; the triangular shape of it looked like something out of Sesame Street, and the idea of staying in a cabin gave me a taste of what it was like to be Laura Ingall's from Little House on the Prairie. read more...

A 1950's Drive around Phoenix, Arizona - with 5 Year Olds

It's difficult to watch this video without being distracted by the narrator, whose unique voice will have you hearing quotes from the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" in your head. Yes, it's Jimmy Stewart! (or, James Stewart) His voice alone brings up instant sentimental feelings. read more...

It's a Hot Night in Alaska

As a tribute to Alaska, we have this hot number performed by Betty Grable and cast from the 1951 film, "Meet Me After the Show".

This clip starts out with something hot from our other newest state - Hawaii. As the two men sit and talk, notice what is on the table. It's a Hawaiian Hula Girl lamp - and she dances! Yes, her hips move! I know this isn't Hawaii Day for Retropolis, but I had to point that lamp out; it's a tropical treasure. read more...

There's a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Alabama - and it's the only FLW house in the southeast you can actually tour!

In our Retropolis Tour around America, we begin with Alabama. When you think of homes in Alabama, you might not think "modern architecture". But, Alabama has it's very own Frank Lloyd Wright house!

Look like a 40's pin-up girl with this gorgeous hair style

There's something about pin-up models of the 1940's and 50's. They were glamorous and chic - never trashy, no matter what they wore... or didn't wear.

The most important feature for a 40's pin-up model is her hair. A voluptuous woman looked even more voluptuous with her curvy hairdo. It was all about curves back then, and it's time to embrace curves again today.
