20 Years Ago: 1991 - Gianni Versace Kicked Off 90's Fashion to a Fabulous Start!

Today Gianni Versace would have been 65 years old. I first became aware of him as a teenager around 1990. I discovered that people who loved fashion put Versace on a pedestal. The Versace name was always spoken of with pride. I knew this designer had to be someone special before I even saw any of his designs simply because of the way people said his name.  read more...

60 Years Ago: Thanksgiving Etiquette in 1951

It's time to brush up on your Thanksgiving etiquette so you will be prepared next week to sit down with mother and father. Here are some of the tips you may or may not get from this helpful 1951 Thanksgiving etiquette video:

1.Be sure to offer mother help in the kitchen, and be sure to watch father carving the turkey.

2. Chew with your lips closed.

3. Do not push your plate away.

4. Wear your best Christmas sweater.

5. Do have fun, but do not speak with too much enthusiasm. Monotone and slow is good.  read more...

The Death of The William Livingstone Mansion in Detroit

The William Livingstone Mansion of Brush Park in Detroit, Michigan had clearly been abandoned for years, but rarely do we ever see a building literally crumbling before our eyes. Often when I see old, abandoned buildings that have deteriorated I wonder how it happens or when it happened - those moments when the porch caved in or the roof developed that gaping hole. This video shows the very moment when the front of this mansion... fell off. read more...

Retropolis Tour of America: Chicago, Illinois - Christmas at Marshall Field's

Unfortunately, I never got to experience a Marshall Field's Christmas in Chicago. I did go to the Marshall Field's Dallas store at The Galleria when I used to live there, but it was more of your typical beautiful department store. Beautiful was great, of course, but it wasn't spectacular like the Marshall Field's store on State Street in Chicago. The Chicago Marshall Field's was the ultimate department store shopping experience, especially at Christmas time. I can say this even though I never even got to go. read more...

1950's Halloween Costume Parade

This 50's home movie was uploaded to YouTube by homemoviedepot who stated that it is Donald E. Boyd's home movies. In the beginning of the video, you'll see kids parading their 50's Halloween costumes (based on the info at YouTube, I believe this is from 1956). I think these home movies were all filmed in Port Huron, Michigan.  read more...

Horror Movies of the 70's and 80's : Prom Night - the 1980 version

It's Halloween! Time to pull out the VCR and get out those heavy video tapes of your favorite horror films. When I was a kid and we used to rent videos, I was always either renting something sweet and cute, like "Mary Poppins" or something disgusting and terrifying, like "Prom Night". I have no idea why a little girl who loved Barbie dolls and fluffy stuffed animals would also love to scare the heck out of herself, but I did. I watched "Prom Night" several times over the years, and it scared me every time. read more...

Remembering Analog TV - When you could pick up TV stations far, far away - even Idaho Falls TV stations in Illinois!

Our next stop on our Retro Tour of America is Idaho. We're going back in time to Idaho in the 1980's. Do you remember the days when you could flip through the stations late at night and discover that your TV was picking up TV stations in other cities far from where you lived? I almost forgot all about that, until I discovered this YouTube video in which a TV station was picked up over 1,000 miles away. A TV station in Idaho Falls, Idaho was picked up in Monee, Illinois! read more...

Happy Birth CLAY to Art Clokey! Thank you for Gumby, Pokey, Davey AND Goliath!

I feel grateful that I grew up in a time when I could see stop motion clay animation on TV. I was absolutely mesmerized in my childhood by these wonderful, moving clay figures. Who knew that something as Earthy and simple as clay could come to life? Art Clokey and his wife Ruth, that's who! They were the creators of Gumby in the 1950's.  read more...

That beautiful voice, that beautiful nurse - Julie London

Happy birthday to actress and singer Julie London! She would have been 85 today. Hard to believe! I was a little when I first saw her on the TV show "Emergency!". I grew up watching that show in syndication, so I will always think of Julie London as a beautiful, young nurse. She was in her 40's and 50's when she played the role of nurse Dixie McCall. I didn't realize that at the time. Young men, and even young boys had a crush on nurse Dixie McCall. read more...
