May 21st - The End of the World and WarGames

When I was a little girl, fear of a nuclear war was all the rage. I remember a kid in the third grade coming to class crying because his big brother told him that the end of the world would finally come that day. I was curious about that possibility, but skeptical. If the end of the world was really coming tomorrow and his big brother was so sure about it, how come nobody else was freaking out about it?

The end of the world didn't come, and the third grade continued. Soon after that little end of the world scare, I saw a movie called "WarGames". If you haven't seen it, it's a totally awesome 80's gem. Will Matthew Broderick (pre-Ferris Bueller) cause WWIII and bring an end to the world as we know it simply by playing a computer game called Global Thermonuclear War? You'll just have to see the movie to find out!

Or, maybe you won't get the chance to see it after all because some people believe that the world will end tomorrow, May 21st. Can it be? Or, is this an 80's rerun?

Actually, fear of the end of the world goes way back before the 80's. As an antique dealer, I came across books and record albums from different decades that declared the end of the world was coming very soon. A few years ago we found a record album in which the cover declared the exact date in the 1980's in which the world would end. The album features a preacher warning people to get ready. While the end did come for record players, the end did not come for the world. In fact, not only has the world continued, but record players have made a bit of a return, as people buy them up to listen to their old favorites.

If you have a record player, I have some suggestions of tunes to play tomorrow to go with the theme of things coming to an end:

"It's The End Of The World As We Know It" by REM

"The End Of The World" - Skeeter Davis

"The End" - The Doors

"End Of The Road" - Boys II Men

"Time of Your Life" - Green Day

"Let's Just Kiss And Say Goodbye" - The Manhattans

"Goodbye To You" - Scandal

"Closing Time" - Semisonic

Thank you to  for posting the WarGames trailer on YouTube. Seriously, you guys should watch that movie - if you get a chance before the world ends tomorrow.
