The History of Tiffany & Co. Begins 200 Years Ago, When Charles Lewis Tiffany was Born.

The name "Tiffany" has become so well known that many people refer to any stained glass lamp as a "Tiffany lamp" (whether it was made by Tiffany or not). It has become so well known that people often refer to a certain shade of pale blue as "Tiffany blue", and they might even decorate their wedding cake in that color, or dress their bridesmaids in that color, or even paint their home that shade. The name "Tiffany" has become so well known, that there was a movie made in 1961, called "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and even a song made more than 30 years later called "Breakfast at Tiffany's", which referred to that movie, which was referring to the Tiffany store, which all lead back to the Tiffany name.

The Tiffany name, as it is referred to in all of the above, goes back 200 years when Charles Lewis Tiffany was born on February 15, 1812 in Connecticut. The Tiffany name itself goes back much further, of course. In fact, it was a $1,000 loan from his father which allowed Charles Lewis to open a small store in New York City with his friend when he was just 25 years old. The store eventually became Tiffany & Co. and moved to Fifth Avenue. That's the story in a quick, little nutshell, but there is a lot more to Charles Lewis Tiffany than that. You can start by reading about him here at Wikipedia.

Most people associate the Tiffany that we know today with his son, Louis Comfort Tiffany, whose extraordinary work with stained glass brought the Tiffany name even greater popularity than ever before. But, we should recognize that there would be no Tiffany & Co. without Charles Lewis Tiffany and the help of his own father.

Happy 200th Birthday to Charles Lewis Tiffany!
