Happy peaceful, non-violent, beautiful 70th Birthday to Joan Baez

Joan Baez turns 70 years old today, but she is one of those beautiful people who will always remain forever young. She has believed in peace and non-violence throughout her music career, and has never given up on that. We need Joan Baez's ideas of peace now more than ever in our country.

Happy Birthday, Joan.

Sending peace on Joan's birthday to those who were killed or injured in yesterday's terrible act of violence in Tucson, Arizona. May God heal the wounded and bring peace to everyone's  families.

Organic Farms, Buying Local, and Charles Ingalls' Birthday

Charles Ingalls was born January 10, 1836. Happy 175th Birthday, Pa! He was best known as the father to Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the "Little House on the Prairie" series, which was based on their prairie life in the 1800's. Charles and his wife Caroline had five children. Sadly, their only son died when he was a baby.  read more...

20 Years Ago: Career Opportunities - Another Great Film By John Hughes

I became hooked on John Hughes in the 1980's, but somehow when "Career Opportunities" was out in the theaters in 1991, I completely missed out on it. I didn't even know it existed until it showed up on cable. The first time I saw it, I missed the very beginning of it and didn't know it was written and produced by John Hughes. I didn't even catch the name of the film because I missed those first minutes. But, I loved it so much that it stuck with me over the years and I wondered about the movie that I thought of as "that Target movie". read more...

Got Vintage Handkerchiefs?

The Christmas season flew by for my husband and I because half of December involved us being ill. He was sick first, so I was a nurse to him. Just as he started to think he was feeling better, the illness went into the next phase for him. While doing whatever I could do to help him, I tried very hard not to pick up the bug he had. Even when my throat started to feel funny and I started to feel that "loss of energy" feeling, I had hoped that if I talked myself into believing I just had a little sinus issue, it would soon pass. read more...

70 Years Ago, Faye Dunaway Was Born. 30 Years Ago, We Met Mommie Dearest

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who didn't think wire hangers were such a big deal. They were simply triangular objects that were used for hanging clothes.

Then, I saw the movie "Mommie Dearest". WHOAH. Did THAT change my view of wire hangers!

Wire hangers became frightening objects that were used to attack little girls.

What else did I get out of that movie as a little girl?

Some mommys are really, really mean.

What's that antique tea cup with the hole in it? It's a moustache cup!

These days in any home store or souvenir shop we can find a million varieties of coffee mugs. However, we never see one that has little ledge on it with a hole in it. That's because men don't get their moustaches waxed anymore. When I say "waxed", I don't mean the kind of waxing that women do to REMOVE hair. I mean the kind of waxing men used to do back when curled moustaches were in style. They would dye their moustaches and curl them, which would end up in moustache disaster when dipped in hot coffee. So, a "moustache cup" was invented to keep the moustache dry. read more...

55 Years Ago - Elvis Presley - First TV Performance!

Elvis Presley's first performance on national TV was on a CBS show called "Stage Show", recorded in January 1956. The show was hosted by the Dorsey brothers - Jimmy and Tommy. Notice when Elvis was introduced how TRUE those words were, "He's going to make television history for you."  read more...

My oh my... look who's 255! Happy Birthday, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!

On January 27, 1756 baby Wolfgang was born in Salzburg, Austria. He began composing music just five years after he was born. Just 35 years after he was born, Mozart died. More than 600 works were composed by Mozart in his 30 years as a composer. I would say that if her were alive today, he would have every right to go around quoting Ron Burgundy in the movie "Anchorman" when Ron Burgundy said, "I don't know how to put this, but I'm kind of a big deal." read more...

Artifacts Destroyed at Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Egypt

This is my third attempt at writing about Egypt. My laptop has been having trouble, so I lost my work on two different days recently while trying to write about Egypt. It's extremely frustrating to lose what you have written, and it's also very frustrating to try to write again what you've already written. But, those feelings are still all very minor compared to what the people of Egypt are going through right now. read more...
