The Titanic Menu - Dining on the Titanic

25 years ago, on September 1, 1985, the Titanic was discovered at the bottom of the ocean, nearly 75 years after it sank. Over the years, many artifacts from the Titanic have been retrieved from the bottom of the ocean, including china that was still in excellent condition. Of course, paper items, such as the Titanic's menu, could not survive in the ocean. read more...

The Wild Horses of Corolla, North Carolina

As I write this, Hurricane Earl is moving over the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It has weakened to a Category 2. It made me wonder how the wild horses are doing out there.

In the far north end of the Outer Banks, there's Corolla, North Carolina. Corolla isn't the "typical" beach tourist spot that's filled with motels and high rise hotels and condos. Corolla is a place where you'll mainly find large beach houses that families rent out by the week that look like this: http://www.twiddy.com/    read more...

Picnics in the 1960's

Hope you're having a great Labor Day! Maybe you're enjoying a picnic with your family. Perhaps you are jumping rope, having potato sack races, and three-legged races! Okay, so maybe families don't have picnics quite the same as they did 50 years ago, but it's time to bring back the fun!

The family in this 1960 video sure has a lot of fun as they celebrate a couple's 25th anniversary. Most importantly, they are surrounded by the ones they love. It's a sweet and cheery look at special day in the life of a family in 1960.  read more...

One Magical Night in 1955 with Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins

It's Buddy Holly's birthday today. If he was still alive, he would be 76 today. Sadly, he died in a plane crash at the young age of 22. Don McClean calls that day  "the day the music died" in the song "American Pie". He was only a star for a year and a half before he died, but what an influence he had on rock music!  read more...

Vintage Owls and a 1950's Monster Sighting

Autumn is on the way and Halloween is a month and a half away, so this is the time of year for owl collectors to have more of a selection to choose from when adding to their owl collection, whether they prefer new, antique, or vintage owls. Or, if you're an owl collector, maybe you prefer all three! Or, what about hand crafted owls at craft fairs? WHO knew there would be so many owls to choose from?  read more...

The Toast-O-Lator Toaster : It's a mini vintage toast factory!

This has got to be the coolest toaster EVER. Made from the 1930's - 1950's, the Toast-O-Lator would slowly move your piece of bread across the toaster while toasting it. When the bread finished toasting, it would appear on the other side of the toaster as toast. Even though it's not magic, it FEELS like magic, and who doesn't like to start the morning off with a little magic?  read more...

I want the perfect 50's pin curl hair style! And I think I found my answer - a pin-curl permanent!

My neighbor, Hazel, has the most modern fashion sense. It seemed as though she changed her hairdo the moment the clock struck midnight on New Years, ringing in 1950. She was ready for these modern times in every way you can imagine. And I do mean EVERY way. Neighbors have been talking about the tight sweaters and tops she wears, saying she needs to wear looser blouses or else she'll attract the wrong type of men. I say, my neighbors are the ones who need to loosen up. Who cares what Hazel wears?

Happy Birthday, John Ritter, one of the best physical comedians of all time!

John Ritter was my first crush on an adult. When I was a little girl, my first two crushes were Ricky Schroeder, who was a few years older, and John Ritter, who was much older than me. He was probably in his late 20's at the time.  read more...
